To maintain proper muscle tone Gordon Setters need much exercise, but not early in age. This breed is not fully grown up until 2 years of age. The forced exercise can stress joint areas. Adult Gordon Setters are fairy sedate dogs.
Weight: Males are 55-80 pounds, females are 45-70 pounds.
Height: Shoulder height for males is 24-27 inches, females are 23-26 inches.
Life Span: Up to 17 years.
Gordon Setters - Dogs - Grooming
The long coat of Gordon Setter Dogs needs frequent cleaning and bathing at least once a week. Regular brushing maintains the gloss. The long ears need special attention, but clean only visible area. The Gordon's teeth should be cleaned with special dog toothpaste. Also clip the nails short every week.
Gordon Setters - Dogs - Training
Being smart and curious Gordon Setter dogs are easy to housetrain. Using their natural desire for a clean bed, consistent training and a crate ensure good results. About 9 months of age the male dogs may mark territory. It doesn't mean the dog has forgotten the housetraining; it's just the new way to communicate. Treat it like a new lesson to be learned.
Young Gordons usually go through a fear period or too. It often happens after they have entered the show. You should act like nothing is wrong and continue to take them out. Don't let Gordon Setters learn that this behavior allows them to get out of any situation.
