Gordon Setters - Dogs - History
Gordon Setters originated in Scotland. It is the only gundog among the native breeds of Scotland. It possesses many characteristics of the Irish and English Setter. Black and tan Setters existed there at least by the 1600s, and Alexander, the 4th Duke of Gordon, established Gordon Setters in the beginning of the 19th century. They took part in dog shows since 1862. Only in 1972 the British Kennel Club gave the official classification to the breed. Purebred Gordon Setters are excellent dual-purpose dogs suited to working in the field and exhibited in the show. Besides they are faithful companion dogs and are very good with children.
Gordon Setters - Dogs - Faults
Purebred Gordon Setters shouldn't have the following characteristics:
- Bloodhound type with heavy or big head and ears, clumsy body, or the Collie type with pointed muzzle and curved tail.
- Showing signs of shyness.
- Too deep-set or prominent, broad, heavy ears.
- Thick and short neck.
- Crooked legs with out-turned elbows.
- Too broad chest.
- Too long or hooked tail.
- Curly, not shining coat with too many white markings.
Gordon Setters - Dogs - Health
Gordon Setters are actually very healthy and problems arise infrequently. Bloat (Gastric Torsion) is a serious problem when the stomach swells and the pain is acute. It happens if the Gordon Setter is exercised immediately before or after eating or is fed heavy food.
Congenial Renal Disease (Juvenile Renal Disease) leads to premature death in puppies or older dogs. It's inherited in many purebred dogs. Another inherited disease is Hip Dysplasia causing problems with the joints. Progressive Retinal Atrophy begins with a gradual loss of sight and can lead to blindness. Thyroid Deficiency causes the coat to become dull and thin. If untreated, obesity, mental dullness, and even lethargy are possible. The only way to avoid these problems in Gordon Setters is to test the breeding stock.
