Gordon Setters - Dogs - Functions
Gordon Setters are the heaviest and the slowest working of the Setter breeds. It has a steady following, but lacks the flash and speed. The breed is good at bird hunting; it's capable of hunting all day. Gordon Setters make the best family companions among Setters.
Gordon Setters - Dogs - Standard
Gordon Setter dogs are good-sized, well balanced, sturdily built, well muscled, with plenty of bone and substance, but active, upstanding and stylish, appearing capable of doing a full day's work in the field. Their appearance suggests stamina and strength rather than speed. Gordon Setters have a short back, well sprung ribs, a short tail, and a heavy and finely chiseled head, with intelligent, noble, and dignified expression and with no signs of shyness.
The coat of purebred Gordon Setters is of clear coal-black, mahogany-red, yellowish, or tan colors and straight or slightly wavered, but not curly. It should be soft and shining, with longer hair on the ears, on the chest, and under the stomach. There shouldn't be tan hairs mixed within the black, or black hairs mixed within the light colors. The borderlines between black and tan colors should be clearly defined. Black penciling on toes is allowed.

The Gordon Setter's head should be deep and it's broadest between the ears. The cheek is narrow as the leanness of the head allows. The muzzle is rather long with almost parallel lines. The lips are clearly indicated while the black nose is big and broad having open nostrils; the dark brown eyes are not too deep set and the large, thin ears are low set.
The neck of the Gordon Setter dog is long and lean without throatiness. The legs are big-boned and straight. The chest is deep with well-sprung ribs, which leaves plenty of lung room. Gordon Setters possess a gait that is smooth and free with high head carriage.
